On the menu: Join us for a luncheon with Helen Ladson of Heritage Works, Inc. Ms. Ladson's presentation will discuss community empowerment through historic preservation and environmental stewardship!


Additional Information

Founded in 2021, Heritage Works is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower, sustain, and revitalize the Gullah Geechee heritage and culture by honoring the traditions and reclaiming the practices of its unique Georgia Coast. Their vision is to provide programs and initiatives that encourage the cultivation of tour guides, docents, agri-culinarians, tradespeople, and entrepreneurs, with a focus on historic preservation throughout the state of Georgia and the Gullah Geechee Nation.

Key Achievements:

  1. Established a community on the StoryCorps mobile app that features over 40 local, state, national, and international historic moments with topics including environmental and socioeconomic injustice since December 2023. (https://archive.storycorps.org/communities/heritage-works-for-us/

  2. Authored and produced the Community Needs Assessment survey used throughout the city of Brunswick & Glynn County to assess the needs of residents severely impacted by the April 2023 Pinova~Hercules Explosion. This survey assessed over 150+ residents and was later used as an example of community-led engagement during the 2024 American Chemical Society's Spring 2024 Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.

  3. Led a successful 6-week summer camp in 2023 which hosted 3 paid youth interns who were introduced to over 40 different career paths in environmental justice, social justice, agriculture, and culinary arts.

  4. Creators and stewards of the currently established Ladies & Lads in Lab Coats 2024-2025 youth cohort facilitated by Georgia  Institute of Technology's CO3@GT Lab which focuses on ocean acidification, groundwater quality, salinity, and much more.

  5. One of 130+ organizations that are currently calling on Congress to act with urgency to protect families and restore rivers damaged by Hurricane Helene and Milton.
