About the Event

We look forward to this event on Friday, March 12, 2021 to educate and raise awareness about historic Harrington School, presented by Helen Ladson of the St. Simons African American Heritage Coalition.

St. Simons Island was once 92% African American until the 1930's and the Harrington community is one of three African American communities that were prominent on the island. Each community had its own one-room schoolhouse yet Harrington is the only that remains. Although Historic Harrington School now serves as a Gullah Geechee museum it, like the Gullah Geechee culture, is not an artifact that symbolizes the death or dying off of a culture. Historic Harrington School represents the past contributions and present commitments of a group of people who are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of future generations of the Gullah Geechee Culture.
