Center, Venture Drive, Brunswick

Often, the GEC receives calls from people considering a purchase of a home,
land, or business in Glynn County. They want to know if there are old
dumps, toxic sites, or other environmental hazards. Several of these calls
have been for areas around the Brunswick Wood Preserving Superfund Site.

Uncontrolled areas of toxic waste, like Brunswick Wood Preserving, are a
significant economic stumbling block. Repeatedly, we have provided
information to companies and people doing their due diligence work about a
property near or abutting the Site. Often, it is the same property for
which we have received previous inquiries. After many years, the economic
well-being of the area remains stagnant. Until meaningful progress is made
to stop the migration of chemicals to Burnett Creek, under nearby properties
through the groundwater, and flooding of adjoining neighborhoods with toxic
chemicals, the economic future of the area will remain blighted.
The EPA recently announced that funding has been obtained to start
containment of the Site. You can learn what to expect, as work is begun at
the Site, by attending a public meeting from 6-8 PM on Thursday, April 5th,
at the Stellar Center, located at exit 38 off I-95 beside the Econo-Lodge.
Your attendance will help us demonstrate that our community wants this site
fully remediated.

In
October 2005, several homes in the Floraville Road neighborhood were flooded
by contaminated water from the overflowing ponds on the Brunswick Wood
Preserving Superfund Site. The water flowed through other neighborhoods
before entering Burnett Creek. |
