EPA Responds to Office of Inspector General Report on Hercules 009 Landfill Superfund Site

The EPA Region 4 responded June 21st to the EPA Office of Inspector General (OIG) Audit Report on the Hercules 009 Landfill Superfund Site.  Included in the response was the Five-Year Review, now three years late.

   The response is currently under review by our Technical Advisor, Dr. Kevin Pegg, who will produce a report.  A cursory review of the EPA response indicates that EPA Region 4 is refusing to implement the OIG's recommendations, and otherwise misrepresenting the findings in the OIG Audit of the Site.

   As reported previously, EPA Region 4 wants to look at only three of the over 800 chemicals in toxaphene.  These three chemicals are not plentiful in Brunswick.   Other toxaphene chemicals, found in large amounts in Brunswick, are the ones EPA Region 4 continues to resist reporting or considering when evaluating risk to citizens of Glynn County.
