3. Feeding and other relationships "What do mussels eat?
Mussels are filter feeders. They use their gills to bring microscopic food to their mouth!
Do mussels open their shells WIDE to get food? No. If they did other animals would eat their soft inner body. They only open their shells wide enough to allow the in and outflow of water.
Food Web: Sunlight > Phytoplankton (and) > Zooplankton > Mussels > Fish > People

"Mussels of the Altamaha River" is a course designed to teach ecological relationships and habitat use patterns using the mussels of the Altamaha River to show the interdependence of species for reproduction, transportation, and food. Objectives include discussion of the interdependence of all life within a watershed.
