| 1. What is a mussel?
A mussel is an animal with two shells that are held together by elastic ligaments. They have soft inner bodies with two pairs of gills, a single large foot for moving short distances and muscles for keeping their valves tightly closed.
Their multipurpose gills are used for the uptake of oxygen, for moving microscopic food (plankton) into the mouth, and also for housing and nourishing mussel larvae in females.
