Georgia Power and
Atlanta Gas Light (the Companies) completed remediation of the saturated
soils at the former Brunswick Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) in September
2007. In January 2000, the Companies conducted soil remediation above the
water table. The soil was certified and approved by the Georgia EPD as
meeting cleanup criteria. Since that time the groundwater has been
monitored semi-annually. The 2007 corrective action addressed the deeper
saturated soil below the water table. The Companies are confident that the
2007 corrective action will allow the affected groundwater, which is
isolated to the site, to be reduced substantially.
Between June and
September 2007, the Companies removed 8,350 tons of saturated soils, which
were impacted with dispersed tar and oil by-products of the manufactured gas
process. The excavation of saturated soils extended to a depth of 40 feet
below ground surface (bgs). The excavation was backfilled with a clay and
cement mixture up to 11 - 15 feet bgs. The remaining surficial soil was
backfilled to grade.
The Companies will
be reinstalling groundwater monitoring wells on site. The wells will be
monitored semi-annually until the groundwater meets cleanup criteria.
Thank you to Georgia Power for providing this update.
